In a season of rapid-fire historic events, one of the most profound was pretty much overlooked by the media. On Sunday and Monday, March 27 and 28, the foreign ministers from UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, Egypt as well as the United States’ Secretary of State were hosted by Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid for a summit held in Israel. This event would have been historic if only for the fact that these Arab leaders had never stepped foot in Israel before.
But the REALLY big news is that they claim to have “laid the groundwork” (All Israeli News, 3/29/22) for the Mideast’s version of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). Article 5 of NATO specifies that an attack on one member nation is an attack on all and that all members must come to the defense of the attacked nation. The Arab representatives came together over a very real shared concern about the danger Iran poses to each of them and agreed to have each other’s back in case of an attack by Iran. Yes, the very same Iran that Europe and the USA are busy trying to appease by removing sanctions. For several years Israel has given the world documents by the bus load proving what Iran is up to but they have been ignored.
So, back to Article 5 of NATO. We know from God’s message to Daniel that the seven year tribulation clock begins ticking when a treaty that guarantees Israel’s security is signed by “the many.” (Dan 9:27) Prophecy scholars (me included) have always speculated that “the many” would be western European nations, or the United Nations, or the actual NATO. (see Flyover-level Zoom Towards the Second Coming Part 1 blog posted in the summer of 2020.)
It’s only when the Trump administration orchestrated what’s referred to as the Abraham Accords that scholars looked up and said, “Wait a minute! Maybe it’s an Arab coalition that protects Israel”. Even then, I wrote that I could see nothing on the horizon that would make such a treaty likely. Now I can.
Add this bit of news to what Russia is reported to have said on March 23, 2022: Russian Ambassador to Syria Alexander Efimov warned Thursday that Israeli strikes in Syria are “provoking” Russia to react, in one of the strongest Russian condemnations of Israeli operations in Syria. Efimov additionally complained that Israeli strikes aim to “escalate tensions and allow the West to carry out military activities in Syria.” White House News 3/24/22
My, how quickly things change these days.
